PART VII.

CHAP. I.

THE ESPONTOON EXERCISE

It is necessary in the first place to observe, that the Officers with ordered espontoons, must stand quite steady, cast their eyes to the right, let their left hands hang down behind their swords, keep their feet in a line, their knees stiff, and their front even.

The Officers must always dress with their bodies and espontoons in a straight line to the right; must divide their distances, and perform the motions quick and short, and with great life.

N.B. When the Officers perform the exercise alone, they are not to wait longer between each motion, than while they can tell one, two; but at other times, as long as usual.

Advance your Espontoons!  Three Motions.

1.  Bring up the espontoon briskly, and at once before you, seizing it as low down as you can with the left hand, and hold it right up and down with out-stretched arms from your body, so high that the thumb of your right hand may come even with your mouth. .

2.  Raise the espontoon with your left hand so high, as to be able to seize it under the butt with your right, at the same time slip your left hand down to your right, and hold it in both hands in a perpendicular line from your body, keeping your right arm quite stretched down in this motion.

3.  Draw the espontoon briskly against your right shoulder, and throw back your left hand nimbly behind your sword.

Order your Espontoons!  Three Motions.

1.  Seize the espontoon briskly with your left hand, placing it above your right, and bring it with a quick motion from your shoulder, holding it in the position above directed.

2.  Quit your right hand, and, sinking the espontoon with your left, seize it again with your right, slipping your left a little upwards at the same time, and hold it as is before directed.

3.  Plant the espontoon with your right, and arm out-stretched upon the ground, and throw your left hand back; holding the espontoon straight up and down, the butt in a line with your right heel, the thumb of your right hand even with your shoulder, and the flat towards the front.

Club your Espontoons!  Three Motions.

1.  Bring the espontoon before you to the position above directed, excepting that your right band must not be above two hands breadth above the left.

2.  Cast the butt of the espontoon about with a very quick motion with your right hand, seize it near the cross-bar w1th your left; and, slipping your right down to your left, hold it with out-stretched arms, right up and down opposite to your left shoulder.

3.  Bring the espontoon briskly down upon your shoulder, with your left arm almost stretched out, and throw back your right hand down your right side.

Order your Espontoons!  Three Motions.

1.  Seize the espontoon with your right hand above your left, and, bringing it nimbly from your shoulder, hold it from your body in the manner explained in the foregoing word of command.

2.  Cast about the espontoon with a quick motion, quit your left hand, and place it beneath your right, holding the espontoon right up and down from your body.

3.  Order the espontoon with your right arm stretched out, and throw your left band nimbly back.

To Club Espontoons in Marching is Performed at Three Motions.

1.  Seize the espontoon near the cross-bar with your left hand, and hold it opposite to your right side.

2.  Quit your right band, and cast about the espontoon with a very quick motion with your left, bringing opposite to your left shoulder; and, placing your right close above your left, hold the espontoon in the position above directed.

3.  Bring the espontoon down upon your shoulder, and throw back your right hand.

Level your Espontoons!  Three Motions.

1.  Seize the espontoon with your right hand, and raise it briskly from your shoulder.

2.  Bring the espontoon with both hands down to a level against your right side.

3.  Throw back your left hand behind your sword, and carry the espontoon as usual in marching.

The facings are performed without any motions of the espontoon: Face briskly about upon the left heel, holding the espontoon, in facing, a little from the ground with an out-stretched arm, and plant it again together with the right foot.

When the officers face together with the battalion, they are to do it as usual; at the first motion, they keep their espontoons ordered; at the second, they raise them a little from the ground with arms stretched out, and plant them, together with their feet, at the third.

CHAP. II.

Saluting Standing is Performed at Seven Motions.

2.  Bring up the espontoon with your left hand, and holding it in a perpendicular line, seize it with your right near the butt.

3.  Salute with the espontoon by bringing it down with a brisk motion within a span of the ground, raising your right arm, and keeping both arms extended from your body.

Saluting Marching is Performed at Nine Motions.

5.  At the next step with the left foot, place the espontoon against the hollow of your right shoulder again, and throw back your left hand.

N.B.  The Officers, either standing or marching, are only to salute once, and if they are to march a second time by the person they have saluted before, they must march upright, and neither salute, nor take off their hats: In saluting marching, the officers at the head of every division or platoon must do the motions together.
