Dress

One of the most distinctive attributes of a drum major is his/her uniform. Typically the uniform is more ornate than the regular band uniform.  In regimental style bands, the drum major doublet and tartan will match the drummer’s doublet and tartan. The Drummer’s doublet or tartan may not always match the piper’s tartan depending on the unit.

Dress can range from Full Dress to  Day Wear to nearly any regimental style uniform in between. The most common dress that you shall see in competition is Day Wear.  Day Wear is a simple, yet stately look that permits more freedom of motion for flourishing.

Inasmuch as the drum major is to exemplify the dress, drill and deportment of the band, particular emphasis is placed on the fit and condition of the uniform.  Dress is of such importance that the RSPBA rules and regulations place 20 points out of 100 on dress alone. Very close competitions have been won or lost on the dress scores. As a result, extreme care must be taken to ensure that the uniform is in excellent condition and that it is worn properly and with perfect alignment.
